What is

Yoga Therapy?

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy is the process of using the tools of Yoga and Ayurveda to help individuals find balance and well-being in their lives.  By working to create steadiness and ease within all of the aspects of a person- body, breath, mind, personality and emotions- the ideal environment can be created that allows wellness and health to flourish.

The goals of Yoga Therapy are to empower individuals to reduce suffering and improve effectiveness in their functioning

Who can benefit?

Yoga Therapy is about treating the whole individual.  It is a complementary medicine that works well when utilized along with traditional medical care and treatments.  By applying techniques specific to your individual needs, Yoga Therapy can be helpful to many people suffering from a wide range of conditions and experiences.  These include:

  • injury

  • chronic pain

  • sleep difficulties

  • imbalanced digestion

  • grief

  • breathing conditions

  • depression

  • anxiety

  • mobility limitations

  • cancer

  • emotional disturbances

  • life transitions

  • eating disorders

  • addiction

Yoga Therapy Methods

Yoga Therapy methods

The methods and techniques of Yoga Therapy are determined based on the needs and capacity of each individual.  The tradition of yoga is guided by the methods set-forth by T. Krishnamacharya, where teachers are asked to "Teach what is inside you. Not as it applies to you, to yourself, but as it applies to the other".  This individualistic approach honors the diversity between each person, as well as the varying experiences throughout one's entire life.

Some of the techniques you may utilize in your Yoga Therapy sessions include:

  • yoga postures (asana)

  • chanting/ sound/ listening

  • nyasa (placement/movements with hands)

  • diet and lifestyle guidance

  • breathing techniques (pranayama)

  • visualization and attention practices

  • meditation

  • guided self-reflection

Follow-up Sessions

Your first Follow-Up session should be within one-week of your initial session.  This meeting is critical to evaluate the effectiveness of your Home Practice and in assessing any needs that arise within the first few days.

Follow-Up sessions will consist of a conversation to review your experiences of your Home Practice and a evaluation of your symptoms.  We will continue to explore techniques that are effective and make adjustments and additions as needed.

We will continue to meet at a frequency that you feel is appropriate (typically every few weeks at the beginning, then monthly or bi-monthly over time).  Through our sessions together, I will support you through the process of integrating these practices into your life and guide you through any questions and insights that arise.

First Session

Your initial Yoga Therapy session will begin with an evaluation of your experiences- including a short questionnaire on your medical and symptom history.  We will have a conversation about your goals and expectations and discuss the primary areas of concern.  We will begin to explore the techniques of Yoga Therapy that are appropriate for you.  As we explore these tools of Yoga, we will create a practice that you will be able to utilize at home.  This practice will be written out in an easy-to-read way, so you can reference the directions between our meetings.
